MESABI  ALC

The Mesabi Area Learning Center offers four alternative school programs for
students who are not experiencing success in their present school setting.
A Continued Learning Plan is developed jointly by ALC staff, regular school
staff, and parents for each learner in the program. Each student's schedule is based
upon an intake assessment and their Continued Learning Plan.
Students may attend the ALC on a full-time basis, or they may attend classes at
their regular school for a portion of the day. The ALC programs utilize print, audio-
visual, and computer assisted instruction in combination with one-on-one and
cooperative learning strategies. The curriculum focuses on the academic and life
skills necessary for students to be successful in their school, family, and community.
Mesabi ALC students are fortunate to have access to a Work Experience
Coordinator who works with them on site. This person provides job leads and
conducts seminars on how to get a job and how to be successful on the job. The goal
is to provide opportunities for students to gain the basic skills necessary for employ-
ability.
The four alternative school programs within the Mesabi ALC are categorized as
follows:
 1. Elementary Program serves a variety of learners in grades 4-6 who must
qualify under the High School Graduation Incentives guidelines. Those who are
eligible will be assessed and identified by course work, achievement, and HSGI
parameters. The program is year long with a thematic approach in reading, written
language, math, and computer utilization. Students are also engaged in performance
based curriculum through the delivery of visual art and field trip experiences that are
interdisciplinary.
 2. Middle Program is a seat-based program with services targeted for grades
7-10. It offers classes M-F in the required subjects of English, social studies, math,
science, physical education, and health as well as elective subjects in life coping skills
and study skills. This program uses a multi-media, outcome-based approach, with
emphasis on thinking skills and appropriate learning behavior
 3. Night School Program offers a high school diploma program for students 16
years of age and older. This is a seat-based program which meets state graduation
standards. Most students take a full schedule of classes, but part-time attendance may
be arranged. Credits are earned on an hourly basis. Classes offered on a rotating
basis included English, math, social studies, science, etc. A variety of aptitude tests
and interest inventories are available in assessing students for career changes.
 4. Independent Study Competency-Based Program offers the following
courses: English and social studies, math, and science/biology, etc. A student is
allowed to take a maximum of three 1.5. courses at one time. Each 1.5. course
contains a listing of learner outcomes. Each outcome has a specific requirement that
enables the student to prove his/her proficiency, and lists specifically how mastery is
measured. Eligible l.S. students must satisfactorily complete course work and meet
teacher contact time standards to earn credit.
