Program Information
Detroit Lakes Independent School District #22 has established, as one
of
its goals, the Alternative Learning Center for those individuals who
have left the regular school setting prior to completion of High School
graduation requirements.
Over 250 students have earned their High School diplomas since the
program began. In 1996-97 over 30 students have graduated and
200 have
progressed towards completion of their requirements.
Attendance
To attend the ALC, students must be at least 16 years old and eligible
under the High School Graduation Incentives Program. Students
may be
referred for enrollment by surrounding school districts.
Academic Provisions
The Detroit Lakes Alternative Learning Center Provides individual
instruction based on the learning styles and abilities of the student
through a personalized learning plan. The curriculum is tailored
to
each student with the assistance of technology and to comply with the
future implementation of graduation rule requirements. Courses
are
offered in basic subject areas as well as district access and post
secondary options. Opportunities for community service and volunteer
work are encouraged in all subject areas. Independent study is
based on
responsibility level and the instructional contact time needs of each
student. The curriculum addresses cultural diversity issues and
emphasizes study and task management skills.
School-to-Work Opportunities
Students may take advantage of transition services including
school-based learning through career assessment, planning, and guidance,
vocational/academic applied learning, work experience and youth
apprenticeship programs. Access to district programs is encouraged
and
assistance is available to learners who express need for connecting
activities.
Support Services
The ALC has full access to all School District #22 support services.
School nursing services, personal guidance and counseling services,
social worker, minority services, school psychologist and special
education services are available to all learners. Parent involvement
is
also encouraged. On site services include community education,
Early
Childhood Family Education with child care, family and adult education
services.
The center has continuing collaboration with MN Workforce services,
correction services, mental health agencies, social service agencies,
counseling services and chemical abuse centers. The ALC also
cooperates
with organizations which promote good citizenship, responsible behavior,
sobriety and service to the community.
