Bluff Country Learning Options (BCLO) is an Area Learning Center which
serves students in the Southeastern Minnesota school districts of:
Caledonia, Houston, LaCrescent-Hokah, Rushford-Peterson, and
Spring Grove.
BCLO provides non-traditional educational services to identified at-risk
learners in a variety of settings.
BCLO Senior and Middle Level programs provide full-time learning
opportunities to individuals who have failed to succeed in traditional
settings. These two pull-out programs are offered on a year round
basis
at separate store-front sites in Hokah, MN.
These programs are staffed by a variety of full and part-time teachers
and paraprofessionals. Course offerings include:
Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Basic Sciences,
Work Skills, Group/Interpersonal Skills, Applied Computer, and
Youth
Service
The senior level program offers two shifts: 8-1 and 1-6. The middle
level program offers service from 8-3.
The senior level program has a current enrollment of 40 learners.
(We
are in the final stages of a remodeling project which will, as of
January 15th, 1998, allow us to serve up to 50 learners.)
The middle level program has a current enrollment of 12 learners with
a
capacity for 15 learners.
BCLO also offers extended day and extended year opportunities to at-risk
learners at remote (traditional school) sites in each of the
participating districts.
Extended day opportunities are typically offered between 3:15 and 5:15
on all student contact days. The purpose of this programming
is to
promote success for at-risk learners in the traditional setting by
working closely with parents and traditional school staff. The
ultimate
goal of this program is to alleviate learner movement to pull-out
programming.
Extended Year programming is also offered at sites in each of the
participating districts. These programs are offered from June
through
August. These programs are offered for anywhere from 2-6 hours per
day
for up to 35 days.
BCLO has a strong working relationship with the involved school
districts. As such BCLO students are able to readily access the
various
services offered in their home districts. For example, BCLO learners
are
able to take classes in their home school for part of the day and attend
BCLO for the remainder of the day.
