MAAP STARS is a broad-based vocational organization for students in secondary alternative programs in the United States. The purpose of MAAP Stars is to help students:
Develop employment, academic and social skills.
Experience career related activities that in turn assist them in making an informed career choice.
Build a cooperative and competitive spirit through individual and team activities and competition.
Strengthen social skills and build an appreciation for the responsibilities of citizenship, brotherhood, and the American free enterprise system.
Develop self-confidence; increase motivation, and create a desire for and belief in life-long learning.
To meet with, have fun with, and ultimately develop an appreciation for students and staff from other alternative program.

Northwest Metro Regional STARS Conference
On Tuesday, March 16th the MAAP Northwest Metro Region came together at the Hennepin Technical College (HTC) for their fourth annual STARS competition. We had a great turnout with seven schools attending - Crossroads Main, North, and West; Highview; Ivan Sands; Northwest Passage Charter School and Osseo ALC. The students were “pumped” to prepare for the State STARS event coming up in April. We could not have done it without Linda Valentine, from Highview and Mary Babcock from HTC! Linda is an amazing advocate for our Region and Mary always helps us secure the location each year. A big thank you goes out to Hennepin Technical College for letting us use the space and for running college tours when the students were not competing. The HTC Printing Department also provided award certificates for our events.
We had stiff competition in the four events this year: Lifesmarts, Team Management Decision Making, Public Speaking, and Job Interviews. We send a big thanks to Dave Bakke, the new Alternative Program Specialist from the Department of Education, who helped judged this year. Also, a heartfelt thanks goes out to the numerous unnamed community leaders, national guardsmen, and business professionals who took the day to judge events and help our students.
The Regional Board members responsible for the event were Linda Valentine, Lindsay Bednar, Sue Yankowiak, Todd Mensink, Kip Sackett and Megan Hendrix. Thank you and good luck to all the students at State.
